Drift Seeds

We are intrigued by the fun seeds we find at the river mouth of our tour. These are Drift Seeds. They can come from 1500 ft high up the mountain and flow down the rivers and out to sea, where they drift with the currents and create their colonies elsewhere. Even the Mangrove Propagules are drift seeds. Red Mangrove Propagules can last up to 1 year floating in the ocean before they poke themselves into the ground and start growing. So incredible!

One of our favorite seeds is Mary’s Bean. It has the mark of a cross on it. They say that pregnant women should keep this seed in their pocket to protect them and their unborn baby. Also, it is known to give good luck to mothers.

Another one is the sea purse. You can see the zipper is bordered by gold! Or the Brown Hamburger, which totally looks like a hamburger! The sea heart can be given to a friend for good luck. And the grey nickernut was once used as money by the indigenous!

You can learn more about these seeds on our Mangroves Nature Tour, or by going for a walk near a tropical river mouth today.
